The past year was full of highlights in many different sports. It was a year of some remarkable triumphs and events. Many moments on sports fields and courts during the year were uplifting and heartwarming. Here are some of the main highlights.
Gymnastics
Simone Biles gave an outstanding performance at the Olympic Games in Paris, although she had been suffering from the ‘twisties.’ This causes athletes to lose control of their bodies while they’re in the air. It was exhilarating for viewers to watch when she showed she was stronger than ever in Paris. At 27, this remarkable gymnast now holds 11 Olympic medals. Iowa lost against South Carolina in the championship game, but Clark’s record-breaking career continued as a pro. She won the title of 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year. The WNBA finals will take place in October 2025 in multiple locations.
The Boston Celtics won the 18th NBA Championship in 2024 and overtook the Lakers for the most titles in the franchise. Stars like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown led the charge.
Another NBA moment in 2024 was when Le Bron James and his son, Bronny, shared the court for the Los Angeles Lakers. It was the first-ever father-son duo to do this in the NBA.
Track and field
Track and field is one of the most popular events at the Olympics where everyone had their eyes on Noah Lyles. It was a thrilling photo finish as he won the men’s 100 meters in an extremely fast race. This was the first Olympic gold medal in this event for someone from the U.S. since the 2004 Athens Olympics. Fred Kerley of the U.S. team finished third, claiming the bronze medal.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, another amazing athlete, won Olympic gold in 2024 for the 400-meter hurdles.
Baseball
Shohei Ohtani, a Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher, had an impressive year. He managed to hit 54 home runs and steal 59 bases to become the first 50/50 player in baseball history. He helped the Dodgers to defeat the New York Yankees when they won the 2024 World Series. This was the eighth national title for the Dodgers.
Golf
In April of 2024, U.S. golfer Scottie Scheffler won his second U.S. Masters. He pulled away from the pack in sensational style. When looking at sports tournaments in 2025, one you should watch is the U.S. Masters. It will take place from April 7 to 13 at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. The U.S. Open is another event to watch, and it will be held at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Oakmont, PA in June.
Soccer
The U.S. Women’s National Team also claimed Olympic gold in Paris. The team proved it was still the world’s best in soccer with leaders like Alex Morgan and a rising star, Trinity Roadman. The team made a strong collective effort to win this victory.
Boxing
In November, a historic boxing event took place. Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson took on Jake Paul, a YouTuber turned boxer. The tickets were sold out for this event and Paul won the match after eight rounds. It was a very nostalgic occasion for many of Mike Tyson’s fans who remember his victories and he took his defeat with good grace.
